Are All Supplements Created Equal?

All of us want to live a long and healthy life. Often, we take supplements and eat fresh food in order to stay happy and healthy. However, do you know where your supplements come from or how they are made? Read on my friend, I’m about to tell you.

What is Freeze Dried Powder?

The process of freeze-drying was invented in 1906 by Arsène d'Arsonval and his assistant Frédéric Bordas in France. Several things can happen to a product before the freeze drying process actually occurs. This may include: boiling or baking to concentrate the product or revising the formula of the product or steaming at 140F to sterilize. Formula revision can include adding components to increase stability during processing or preserve/improve appearance. For example, vitamin C is commercially made by fermenting corn sugar which converts the glucose into an ascorbate before freeze-drying into a powder.

How are Capsules made?

Once the vitamin powder is produced, it can be placed into capsules. To make a powder, the fruit is dehydrated at temperatures above 140F- above 130F destroys all the beneficial enzymes. Some vitamin powders may be blended with a filler ingredient such as microcrystalline cellulose or maltodextrin to produce a more even granule. The gelatin capsule themselves are made through a process that involves boiling down certain parts of animals such as hoofs, bones, and connective tissues until a gel like substance is formed. When the boiling process is finished, you have a tasteless, and colorless substance that can be formed into gel capsules that can contain your vitamin supplements.

How are Tablets made?

Vitamin tablets are made in a tableting machine. The pre-made vitamin powder flows to a table that has “tablet molds”. Each “tablet mold” is called a die. When the tablet table rotates, the filled dies move into a punch press where 4-10 tons of pressure is used to compress the vitamin powder into a tablet. The newly formed tablets are then moved to the coating area.

Vitamin tablets are usually coated for a variety of reasons. The coating may make the tablet easier to swallow, mask an unpleasant taste, or make the tablet aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Tablets may also be given a pH sensitive coating that resists gastric acid so the tablet can be dissolved in the intestines instead of the stomach. After the tablets are coated, they may also receive coating of wax before they are bottled.

How are Juice supplements made?

Most juices are not 100% pure juice. They are a fruit concentrate that is added to water. Some juices are fermented and pasteurized which requires refrigeration after opening. Pasteurization kills live enzymes, has fewer health benefits, and can damage the original flavor of the fruit that is being turned into juice so added flavor and sugars need to be added to make the taste palatable. Remember, the potency is in the pulp of raw fruit. In making fruit juices, the pulp is discarded or thrown away to get the juice.

Originally, Noni was eaten raw to promote good health. Once the mature fruit is harvested it ripens in a few days. After ripening within 6-8 hours the fruit will naturally start to decompose and ferment. Research has shown that there are 165 compounds in the pulp of fresh, ripe, noni fruit. However, fermentation destroys all the digestive enzymes and about 50% of the compounds in noni. Almost all noni juice is produced fermented and all noni juice is missing the pulp.

Dr. Brian Issell, who researched pure unfermented noni at University of Hawaii, said, "If fermentation is allowed, then a different chemical profile is almost certainly present. Also, liquid products that have grape or blueberry juice are chemically different." Plus, fermentation destroys all the digestive enzymes.

Raw Food Noni Fruit Leather

Noni Fruit Leather is a noni juice alternative with the highest concentration of Noni 14:1 ratio. Hawaiian Organic Noni grows their own fruit we have the ability to process noni before it ferments. Noni Fruit Leather is a certified organic pure raw food. My wife and I (Steve Frailey) moved to Kauai, Hawaii in 1982 from our organic farm in California. There were no roads, electricity, water or buildings but lots of Noni trees (Morinda Citrifolia) in our valley. We also developed a deep relationship with Noni that was growing all through our valley.  Today we run our Hawaiian Organic Noni farm, and share the gift of health with people throughout the world.
