What is a Noni Fruit?

Morinda citrifolia, aka Noni is a tropical tree in the coffee family. There’s a misconception out there that noni is a shrub, but in reality it grows up to about 9 meters (30 feet), or even taller. The leaves are shiny, dark green, and deeply veined with light green. The name “citrifolia” comes from the leaves’ similarity to citrus leaves.

Noni trees produce a fruit that is oval in shape and when mature can measure from 3-7 inches. An interesting aspect to noni trees is that the tree produces a fruit first and the flowers come out of the fruit after the tree has already made the fruit! Usually in nature, a flower is produced, a bee comes and causes pollination to make a fruit. Each noni fruit has 50-75 flowers on each fruit which ethnobotanists believe the bee visiting a noni fruit with flowers attached are putting beneficial compounds into the fruit through the attached flowers.

The fruit starts green in color, as it grows in size turns yellow in color and eventually will turn white when fully mature. Once harvested the fruit quickly begins to ripen turning translucent white and soft like a ripe tomato. It now gains its smelly characteristic of blue cheese…Noni fruit is also known as Cheesy Fruit or Stinky Fruit!

Noni Fruit History

Morinda Citrifolia originally was brought to Hawaii by the ancient Polynesians as one of the 27 "canoe plants", which they brought for the purpose of starting a new culture. There are six varieties of noni trees worldwide that produce noni fruit. However, only one variety is truly medicinal. The Polynesians knew this, so they only introduced the medicinal variety to Hawaii. Noni fruit contains over 165 compounds in the raw pulp that are healthy for the human body.

Where to get noni fruit?

At Real Noni, on our 70-acre certified organic family farm on the island of Kauai Hawaii. We grow, pick, process and distribute Noni products directly from our organic family farm. The potency of Noni is in the raw pulp not the juice.

Why are we so committed to raw noni pulp?

First, because that’s what’s supported by thousands of years of traditional use. Secondly, it’s scientifically proven via independent lab analysis that our raw Noni Fruit Leather is 14x more potent than noni juice.

Noni fruit ferments within 4-6 hours of ripening. Fermentation creates alcohol that destroys the beneficial enzymes and changes the chemical structure of the compounds. All of our Real Noni products are made from the unfermented fruit and dehydrated using a unique low heat drying process, below 115F for maximum potency.

We spent years developing our slow dehydration process that preserves the beneficial vitamins, minerals, and enzymes found in the raw noni pulp, in the form of a raw Noni Fruit Leather that is non-fermented and has a 2 yr shelf life not refrigerated. Our Noni Fruit Leather is raw food that feeds the cells of the body.

We sent samples of our Noni Fruit Leather and two leading brands of noni juice to an independent lab. Here are the findings:

  • Scopoletin: Noni Fruit Leather 11x more potent
  • Damnacanthal: Noni Fruit Leather 12x more potent
  • Anthraquinone: Noni Fruit Leather 9x more potent

The lab was also able to verify that our Noni Fruit Leather is 14x more potent. A daily two-by-two inch serving size of Noni Fruit Leather provides 6,024 ORAC units that’s more than what you need in a day! Learn more about orac values and antioxidants
