Potency: Noni Fruit Leather vs. Noni Juice

Raw noni fruit is one of nature's most abundant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant sources.

With 165 beneficial compounds, including natural antioxidants, soluble and insoluble fiber, essential fatty acids, and countless other vitamins and minerals, which work together to promote good health.

The Challenge with Noni Fruit

Noni fruit has no shelf life. Picked a peak maturity the fruit begins to ripen quickly and soon naturally rots and ferments which destroys the potency. Therefore, unless you live in the tropics it is not possible to harvest the mature fruit from the tree and enjoy its powerful health benefits. The closest you may get is seeing Noni juice in you local health food store or big box store. However, Noni juice is lacking the nutritional potency that is inherently found in noni.

Did you know? An inherent part of creating noni juice is the fermentation process. When noni fruit is fermented, alcohol is created which destroys a great majority of the naturally occurring compounds found in the pulp of noni. The potency is even further degraded by tossing out the pulp with the solid compounds.

Dr. Brian Issell, who researched pure unfermented noni at University of Hawaii, said, "If fermentation is allowed, then a different chemical profile is almost certainly present. Also, liquid products that have grape or blueberry juice are chemically different." Plus, fermentation destroys all the digestive enzymes.

We sent samples of our Noni Fruit Leather and leading brands of noni juice to an independent lab for testing. We had the lab specifically analyze the four key compounds in noni that scientific research has shown have the most influential impact on health. The results speak for themselves, there is very little potency in fermented noni juice. The true potency is in the raw noni pulp.

 Antioxidants

Antioxidants can offer powerful protection against oxidative stress by protecting the body from the damaging effects of free radicals. Foods high on the ORAC scale effectively help to neutralize free radicals, slowing the damage caused by the oxidative process.

ORAC stands for oxygen radical absorbance capacity or the antioxidant level in foods.

According to the US Department of Agriculture an individual should consume at least 3,000 to 5,000 ORAC units per day for optimal health benefits.

One 2x2 inch serving of Noni Fruit Leather contains 6024 ORAC vs. 1oz serving of Noni Juice contains 433 ORAC.

 Scopoletin

Scopoletin is a coumarin. This compound is a phytochemical, which means it’s a biologically active compound in a plant. Scopoletin is found in the roots of plants of the genus Scopolia, including chicory and stinging nettle, in the passion flower and it’s also found in the pulp of raw noni fruit. Powerful Pain Reliever

In many studies, scopoletin has made a name for itself as a potent pain reliever. One study published in Phytotherapy Research (24[1]:38-42) by researchers from the University Clinic in Hamburg, Germany, reported that noni fruit’s analgesic activity “reduced the pain sensitivity comparably to the central analgesic drug tramadol.” When extracts of noni fruit puree were applied, the “effect was comparable to hydrocortisone.”

Mood Enhancer

Scopoletin’s pain relieving power may be related to another known effect of the phytochemical: mood elevation. This compound binds with serotonin to keep levels elevated. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, sleep, hunger, temperature, and more.

 Anthraquinones

Noni also contains a wide variety of anthraquinones. Anthraquinones are a type of phenol produced by some plants. Many phenols, including a number of anthraquinones, have shown evidence of being beneficial for human health.

Some of the anthraquinones in noni fight enzymes that break down collagen in the body, which may slow down the aging process. Many anthraquinones also help regulate smooth digestion.

 Damnacanthal

The anthraquinone most of interest to noni researchers is called damnacanthal, which likely helps protect plants from UV damage and parasites.

Damnacanthal has been shown to stimulate T cell activity which may help address various forms of damaged cells. Visit  pubmed.gov and search “damnacanthal noni” if you want to learn the specifics.

Traditionally, noni was eaten raw, like a ripe plum or tomato, and that’s the tradition we adhere to here at Real Noni. We spent years developing our low heat dehydration process that preserves the beneficial vitamins, minerals, and enzymes found in raw noni pulp, in the form of raw Noni Fruit Leather that is non-fermented and shelf-stable without the need for pasteurization or refrigeration. When it comes to noni, we are dedicated to quality and potency to provide maximum value to your health.

Joanne

I discovered noni juice in 2002, and it greatly improved my health from severe M.E./CFS, but in the past couple years I’ve discovered the noni fruit leather. It truly is far superior. The difference is obvious! For those who can’t tolerate smell/taste (which I find silly considering some of the things you do drink/eat) get the one flavored with banana. No excuses! Eat it and get well!
